The unofficial mascots of Atlanta... OutKast, who are residents of Atlanta and have had a significant impact on southern rap, are practically a household name in the city.

Big Boi and André 3000 both hail from the East Point neighborhood of Atlanta. By the middle of the 1990s, OutKast's velvety tunes and quirky personalities had established them as a powerful force in the so-called Dirty South, which was the acceptance and success of Southern hip-hop and rap artists in the 1990s and early 2000s.

​With its distinctive sounds and audacious invention, the pair helped the South transition from the periphery of hip-hop production to its current position as the region dominating the genre.

Their feet didn't appear to touch the earth from the time they launched their debut hit, "Player's Ball," in 1994.
